About the Artist
Ayo taught himself to carve while working as a secondary school art teacher in Tottenham, drawing on a school print room that gave him access to both lino and wood. His portraits are carved from birch plywood using a combination of fine and broad gouges, producing prints that range from fine-hatched detail to dramatic knife-cut lines. He prints by hand, burnishing each impression with a wooden spoon to control the depth of tone. His subjects are predominantly people from his North London community, neighbours, elders, young people. Ayo has exhibited at the Printmakers Council and shown at international print fairs in London, New York, and Seoul.
