About the Artist
Born in London to Guinean parents, Amara's practice is rooted in questions of how identity is constructed through image and material. She works on canvas and board, building portraits from acrylic paint and collaged elements, newsprint, fabric scraps, photocopies, maps, that add biographical and historical depth to her subjects. She paints from life, from archive photographs, and increasingly from community portraits of South Asian and African Londoners. Amara has exhibited at Studio Voltaire, Autograph ABP, and has been commissioned for portrait projects by the Wellcome Collection and several cultural institutions.
